After months of rumors, Hydrospace, based in Austria, has introduced the world's first 4-stroke stand-up personal watercraft, putting an end to internet speculation. The S4 and turbocharged S4 High Output, both powered by an 803cc, two-cylinder engine, are designed to excel on the racecourse, with 100 and 163 horsepower, respectively. The company will manufacture 200 units to meet IJSBA Homologation requirements, with the crafts debuting in May 2005 at the IJSBA Corona Extra Euro Tour in Spain. Hydrospace aims to support the IJSBA and promote the sport of watercraft racing worldwide. The company's team, including Chris MacClugage, Chris Hagest, Rok Florjancic, and Nico Lasselsberger, will campaign the crafts in the European Championships and Alpe Adria Cup before debuting in the US at the IJSBA World Finals. The carbon and Texalium laminate used in construction, along with fiberglass-reinforced plastic, is high-tech. The S4 will retail for approximately $12,191, while the S4 HO will sell for roughly $18,611, not including shipping. The US release is expected in mid-summer.

The 2005 World Finals for Junior Ski competition will now accept riders as young as 10 years old, according to the American Power Boat Association (APBA) and the International Jet Sports Boating Association (IJSBA). In 2004, racers were permitted to participate in all APBA events, including the APBA Watercross Nationals, from the age of 12. However, the IJSBA set the age limit for the World Finals at 14. The new rule applies to Freestyle and three Junior classes in the ski division only. The Junior Ski 10-12 Stock, Junior Ski 13-15 Stock and Junior Ski 13-15 Limited classes are eligible to compete at both the APBA Watercross Nationals and the World Finals. Junior racers are not allowed to participate in the Runabout class, and the age limit for that class remains at 16 years old. More details on qualifications and registration will be available shortly, and Junior Ski racers are advised to contact their local race promoter for confirmation.
The PWC Rally, known as the Personal Watercraft Liberty Challenge, is gearing up for an exciting 10-leg rally starting from Key West and culminating in New York City this coming June. The rally will cover a distance of 1600 miles, and riders will face challenging elements as they attempt to complete the journey in just 10 days. Each leg of the trip will range approximately 70 - 160 miles off the eastern seaboard, with roughly five hours a day spent on the water.
According to the promoters SEE Productions, the challenge is open to watercraft owners and sport aficionados looking for challenging adventures with a sense and a taste of the good life. Riders can register individually, as a group of four on one craft, or as corporate teams. Only stock watercraft will be allowed, and the challenge is not just about speed, but perseverance and endurance. This is the U.S. personal watercraft market's first-ever water marathon. Event producer Gilles Dandrieux established a record for the journey this past September, completing the trip in a total cumulative time of 2 days, 15 hours, and 35 minutes. In addition to offering an exciting adventure for participants, a percentage of the registrations will be donated to the Children's Brain Trust Fund at Miami Children Hospital Foundation. The pro Motosurf Nationals will take place in Oceanside, Calif., with eight rounds over four weekends, starting from April 26th and running consecutively until May 18th. The IJSBA also revealed that the races on the weekend of May 3-4 will coincide with Oceanside Harbor Days festival. The Pro Freestyle title will only be determined from Rounds 1-6, as there is a schedule conflict with an existing European event on the final weekend of May 17-18. The National Tour event schedule is also set, starting on May 31st in Rochester, N.Y., with stops in Florida, Houston, Lake Havasu City, San Francisco, and Bay City, Michigan. The tour will conclude at an as-yet-undetermined location in the Midwest in August. To encourage participation and growth for future competitors, the IJSBA has lowered the minimum age in two new Ski classes, Amateur 14-15 Ski Stock and Amateur 14-15 Ski Limited. The organization hopes that the new age rules will attract young competitors who might otherwise pursue other sports. There will also be a dedicated 14-15 Freestyle Class featured during the World Finals. Race officials will hold designated orientation programs for the youngest riders at individual race weekends.
