Sea-Doo® watercraft supplied the power while Red Bull® brought the energy during the Red Bull Tow-At Surfing competition at the Sebastian Inlet Pro. The Globe® Sebastian Inlet Pro took place January 5-12 and is the largest pro surfing contest on the east coast of North America. The $75,000 purse and chance to win a all-new Sea Doo GTI™ watercraft drew many of the best surfers from around the world. The Tow-At was an invitation-only event comprised of nine of surfing’s elite wave riders being pulled by a Red Bull branded Sea Doo WAKE™ watercraft.
Utilizing the towing capabilities of the Sea-Doo WAKE, professional surfers were pulled into the waves at up to twenty miles-per hour leading to dramatic aerial and carving maneuvers. The introduction of the 2005 Red Bull Tow-At marked the first professional surfing tow-at event in history, and set the tone for an exciting run in 2006. The capabilities of the Sea-Doo WAKE watercraft allowed these athletes to access more waves at the perfect break than they would by simply paddling. The result of the Tow-At event is a high-energy, fast-paced contest with tricks and maneuvers being attempted that would be nearly impossible with out the use of a Sea-Doo watercraft. Each competitor was allowed 20 minutes to be towed in the Sebastian Inlet surf for the 1500 spectators lining the beach. This particular day generated waves waist to head high providing the ideal conditions for “sick” heats. The competitors pushed their limits in attempts to gain the high score that would give them the win and the DESS™ lanyard to a new Sea-Doo GTI watercraft. Geoff Brack of California, Cheyne Magnussen of Hawaii, and Josh Kerr of Australia earned the top three scores in the first heat allowing them to compete in a ten minute or ten pull (which ever came first) final. Brack and Magnussen surfed well and filled their ten minutes with innovative and aggressive maneuvers, but it wasn’t enough. The Tow-At victory would go to current world aerial trick surfing champion Josh Kerr who utilized his time snapping turns off of the wave lips, landing big floaters, and finishing with a huge aerial 360.
