Please suggest an intake grate for my Sea Doo GTS which we use on a choppy lake. I wish to preserve as much top end on calm water as possible. However, cavitation in rough water is a real problem. I am considering one of the following: A Westcoast intake grate, and R&D Aquavein intake grate, or Jet Dynamics grate. Doug Doug,
For rough-water riding you need a top loader intake grate to push the water into your jet pump. Be aware that these intake grates will reduce your top speed 1-2 mph in smooth water. All of the brands you mention are good quality grates. I wouldn't hesitate to put any of those on my craft... Jet Ski Tech Talk

There is a difference in battery life between wet, sealed, gel and lithium batteries. A wet-cell battery is a good basic battery, but has its weaknesses. One problem is that these batteries are available in a wide range of quality, and price is not always the indicator of how good the battery actually is.
These batteries fail mainly from non use, which causes permanent damage in the form of sulfation. Some better quality wet batteries have a chemical additive to help prevent this problem, but eventually the battery will be damaged. The other main problem is lack of maintenance keep the electrolytes to the proper level with distilled water. sealed Batteries are usually high quality batteries but may have a lower amp capacity compared to wet or gel batteries. The high the amperage rating, the more cranking power you have. Lithium & Gel Batteries are the best quality being a "maintenance free" battery, they don't suffer when ignored as badly as a wet battery. Of course you pay the price for this convenience. Battery Chargers The Best battery charger I have found for maintaining is a battery tender. It can be left on the battery indefinitely without damaging the battery like a trickle charger. For charging your battery use a maximum of 3 amps. High amperage chargers will damage your battery. Tech Talk I have a 1996 Sea Doo XP and I am considering changing sponsons to a more aggressive type. I want to rip turns.. What do you think? Tommy Tommy,
Handling is with out a doubt one of the top priorities in personal watercraft Seadoo performance. With the speeds and cornering abilities of today's runabout jet ski's, improved handling will give you a greater advantage over your competitors. since every Sea Doo rider has his own ideas about what handles best, experimenting with different Sea Doo sponson positions is your best bet for harder, more aggressive cornering. Tech Talk Seizure occurs when the piston expands and sticks to the cylinder, stopping the engine. Lack of lubrication, a major reason for PWC engine seizure, occurs when fuel and oil are mixed in the wrong ratio, or your oil runs dry. Problems can also be caused by using cheap or non-recommended oils that do not have lubricating qualities required by PWC engines, Failures of oil injection systems are very rare. Over heating is probably the most common cause of seizures. Other possible reasons for seizures are improper tuning of the carburetor; Advanced ignition timing; lack of cooling water; air leaks (causing lean mixtures) at the carburetor or intake manifold, head or cylinder gaskets, or crankshaft seals.
The way to prevent seizures is to have your carburetor adjusted properly by a professional mechanic then leave it alone, use good oil, and make sure your water cooling system is working. (keep an eye on the bypass-water should always be flowing when the engine is running). Tech Talk I own a 95 Kawasaki 750 ZXI Jet ski. What can you suggest to cure porpoising in choppy watter? The ski is stock and ridden on the area lakes in KS. We rarley ride 2 up. RJ RJ,
To cure the problem on your ZXI is to replace ride plate. A couple that worked good on ZXI were Shredmaster ride plates and Aggresser plates. Also a top loading intake grate and Aggresser Sponsons will help cure the problem. Tech Talk I own a 1994 Sea-Doo GTX on which it has a Factory Pipe ECWI exhaust system, Flame arresters, Solas 14/19 Impeller, and a DCT sports thrust cone. The boat runs great and I am happy with the results of the modifications I have made so far, but I have heard the sea doo manifold can crack with aftermarket air filters. I am wondering if this is a concern with the 650 motor in my boat. I had to remove the stock carburetor support bracket to install the aftermarket filters, Could this cause a problem? Art Art,
There has been a problem with the '94 Sea Doo manifolds cracking, especially when the support bracket is removed as required when installing Ocean Pro Vortex flame arresters. There is a cure for this problem. You can make a bracket arm that fits in old mounting holes in head and bent it up to meet up to one of bolts on top of filter. You can find a 1/8 x 1/2 x 12 aluminum bracket at your home depot. You will have to bend it, drill holes and bend it to fit but its a pretty easy fix. Hi Guys, I own a 1992 Sea Doo SP, which I love, To give it some boost I have made several modifications. My Sea Doo has a Skat-Trak 15/20 impeller, Aftermarket head with 31cc domes, Westcoast pipe and waterbox, one mikuni 46mm carb, aftermarket flame arresters, an MSD rev limiter (7500 RPM), stock timing, stock cylinders, a top loader intake grate, and a modified rotory valve. I pre-mix 40:1 and use NGK spark plug BR8EV and92 octane gas. These mods were great at sea level, but now I run at 4,000 feet. The low end is extremely sluggish and I dont rev more than 5900 RPM full throttle. I tried to adjust the idle and low screws with a little success. Are my mods in sync with each other? What should be my idle RPM. Oscar Oscar,
Your SP is suffering from a rich condition and loss of head compression. I would recommend changing the head compression domes to bump up compression aprox 40lbs and re-jetting the carbs for the altitude. Tech Talk I got a simple highly effective tip for any watercraft enthusiast. You know how sometimes hose clamps seem to build up surface rust and corrosion on them. WD-40, silicones, oil and other light sprays just wont do the job. OK heres my seceret, I use a little motorcycle chain lube on all my clamps. The chain lube stays on the clamps band /screw and keeps them from getting exposed to salt water and other nasty stuff. It also helps the screw turn more freely, on or off. Thats it, simple and effective. Thanks and hope you like my suggestion. Steve, Steve,
Thats a great suggestion and we like when tricks are sent our way! Tech Talk, I have a 93 Kawasaki 650 SX stand up that I have been using for pulling a wakeboarder. I know, i know, not to smart, but it works great! All except for the slight hull crack I noticed by the rear outlet exhaust hole. What should I do? Take it the shop and have them charge me $$$$ or can I fix it well enough on my own? Thanks for your help! BMan Bman
if you are not concerned too much with cosmetics, I would remove the fitting and repair the area myself. duroglass and bondo are two companies that make two-part repair mixes for fiberglass. Follow their instructions and work in a well ventilated area. If you want it to look "factory-new" you better head to the body shop. Tech talk I have a pair of 97 Yamaha GP760s that my wife refers to as :the twins" I would like to know how how I can eliminate porpoising of these boats. What effect would replacing the stock steering nozzel with an extended one have? Eric Eric,
Extended steering nozzles would indeed help reduce the tendency for a craft to "porpoise"... as would an extended ride plate. however, I believe the GPs have adjustable trim positioning on the left handlebar that should be able to set to a more comfortable ride. Trim "down" for take off, especially with havier loads, such as kids and/ coolers on back. and "trim "up" once underway for speed and less drag on the PWC. If " porpoising" present, go one "click" down at a time until smooth riding. Tech Talk |
